Mousie's Page ~ welcome!
I do tend to ramble on about my man hermit *flirt!* If you can put up with that, feel free to wander round at will... :)
"Take my hand I give it to you, Now you own me, all I am... You said you would never leave me, I believe you, I believe. I can feel you all around me, thickening the air I'm breathing... Holding on to what I'm feeling, Savouring this heart that's healed."

"A super stampede of colour-drenched public art is set to raise the ‘baa’ for Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year.

Originally commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company, Go Superlambananas is the most ambitious and all-inclusive public art event in the UK this year.

For the next 10 weeks, the city will come alive with 119 mini-icons appearing on round-a-bouts, street corners and even inside major buildings such as Liverpool Town Hall.

The finishing touches to the herd were completed at the Matchworks factory, which was where the original SuperLambBanana was created 10 years ago.

Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council and Deputy Chairman of the Liverpool Culture Company, said: ‘’Go Superlambananas is one of the most eagerly awaited events of our capital of culture year – and I’m sure it won’t disappoint. It’s involved so many people and will touch so many more. I’ve no doubt it will put a smile on the city and strengthen the feel good factor sweeping the city this year.''

The public are being urged to get up-close and personal with the Superlambs.

Trail maps and souvenir guides will be available right across the region in travel centres, tourist information centres, libraries, museums, galleries, and the 08 Place."

I've been coming across and snapping happily away at these wonderful, crazy Superlambs for the last few weeks now, and have put together a slideshow of the best of the photos. Different days, different weather conditions, and different parts of the city. They're brilliant!

A Little Bit of History

A photo of the original LambBanana in it's position outside the Liverpool School of Healthcare in Tithebarn Street, where I had all my lectures during my nurse training. Many's the time I've sat underneath it, hiding from the rain while having a quick smoke break. :)

"So... what is it???

The Super Lamb Banana was the original work of Japanese-based artist Taro Chiezo. Commissioned for the Art Transpennine Exhibition of 1998, the sculpture was a controversial, but welcome addition to the public art arena in Liverpool. Standing an impressive seventeen feet tall and comprised of concrete and steel, the statue first attracted interest from its original position on the Strand. The unusual artwork was created to warn of the dangers of genetically modified food, whilst being appropriate to the city of Liverpool due to the port's rich history in the trade of lambs and the import of bananas.

Super Lamb Banana

As with much modern art, there was initially a degree of scepticism around the Lamb Banana, but residents and tourists alike quickly began to see the unusual artwork as a welcome and humorous feature of the city at a time of much change and large-scale regeneration. Always intended as a piece which would change location around the city centre, it was perhaps less well predicted that the sculpture would see quite such a range of colours during its time. From the Breakthrough charity sponsored "pink" period to the quasi-vandalism that turned it temporarily into a Friesian cow banana, the range of Blue Gnu's ceramic replicas has tracked these changes, with the limited edition Lamb Bananas becoming highly collectible items... "

There's a bit of devious work going on recently. Here's a quick 'Spot The Difference?' competition....

Before...

After...!!

Apparently, Koppy has been stolen and is currently being held to ransom by those terrible blue and whites known as Evertonians! I don't know what they're asking for in return for Koppy's release, unharmed and in one piece. Perhaps an undertaking from Liverpool Football Club to go easy on them in the next local derby match? Hehehehe. :)

"Scousers" ~ love 'em, hate 'em ~ I'm going to miss them. Crazy bunch of people. Scallywag through and through, but with a twisted sense of humour second to none. :)

Very cool Are they heavy? Wonder how difficult it was to kidnap Koppy. I love pop-art like this... In Lexingtion Kentucky there are the horses. And somewhere we lived (I can't remember, and you couldn't begin to imagine how many places we've lived and how many times we've moved...) they had a city wide art exhibit of large hands, all decorated with a theme as these are. Very very cool... Thanks for sharing!

Most unusual. Lamb banana, would never have gotten the connection had you not indicated the history. I was in Cincy once when they had pigs everywhere...similar history. Big pig slauterring houses in the early history of the city. Though they were used as a fundraiser as I recall. You (companies) bought them and then decorated them. So, they were considered functional as well artistic. Many were painted wacky like some of your lambs bananas.

Fun to find and photograph them, I bet. How did you do the slide show thingy? I'm not techy, but love to learn new things.

Love it! And what a great story behind their creation, too. It's a very unstuffy way to make a city connect with art.

PS: Maybe Koppy was the only thing with a Liverpool shirt on that Everton can afford? : )
